I was excited to be invited to speak as part of the panel, “Maps, maps and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” held at the 2025 State of the Map Europe in Dundee, Scotland.

The panel took place on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 11:30 in the “Area” room, was organized by Gala Camacho, and also included Maria Longley from MSF and Sophia Chen from the Canadian Red Cross.

Panel synopsis #

from Gala Camacho’s submission:

“We know mapping interweaves stories of power and gender, that what we see on a map is not neutral, it is a reflection of those who have made, curated, and maintained that map. Let’s unpack.

The latest survey paints a picture that is hard to swallow. If the survey responses are representative of the community ~10% of us identify as not a man (of those who responded to this answer).

We know we have work to do to make OSM a community that includes and genuinely represents the entirety of the world it claims to map. This panel discussion will centre around the actions which have been taken, and the actions which we can take in the future to make OSM a better, more inclusive, more representative, and more empowering map, for all.”
